On the fundamental unfairness of life

Some things in life are hard. And then other things are so gratuitously wonderful. It’s this dizzying mix of suffering and joy, and neither are deserved.  I do not know why God gives life, and takes it away, on a cold night while the women sob. I don’t know why He gives crippling disease to the dear one He loves, and health to another. And life to a third, squalling dearest life, overwhelmed by their riches. And to others, long stretches of a dusty road alone, decades long. I do not understand. Here is my prayer:

May the Lord answer you when you are in distress

May the name of the God of Jacob protect you.

The road is long. But it leads to home.
