On our addictions

Some things “unravel” you, and make you into something else. We generally call them “addictions” or “self-destructive behaviors” or (among old-fashioned folks) “sin”. Yes, there is a battle going on, but we are no passive victims. The universe is full of saints and devils, Christ and Satan, and both are only too willing to help make you into their own image. Every day, we choose. Even when we deny we are, we still choose. Consequently, “we are who we choose to be.”

Know what you are becoming. Accept responsibility. And choose to forgive, to stand fast, to forgive, to love, to admit, to forgive, to become beautiful. Yes, it takes time. A whole lifetime of choosing, choosing deliberately.

To quote an old novel:

“There is still youth and honour and humour in you; don’t fancy they will last in this trade. Men may keep a sort of level of good, but no man has ever been able to keep on one level of evil. That road goes down and down. The kind man drinks and turns cruel; the honest man kills and lies about it. Many a man I’ve known started like you to be a decent outlaw… and ended stamped into slime.”

And to quote an even older text:

And he who sat upon the throne said, “Behold, I make all things new.” Also he said, “Write this, for these words are trustworthy and true.”

And he said to me, “It is done! I am the Alpha and the Omega, the beginning and the end. To the thirsty I will give from the fountain of the water of life without payment. He who overcomes shall have this heritage, and I will be his God and he shall be my child.”

The Spirit and the Bride say, “Come.” And let him who hears say, “Come.” And let him who is thirsty come, let him who desires take the water of life without price.
