I miss George W Bush

Conservatives are giving up, and losing the very idea of America itself. George W Bush understood so well. These new conservatives are a bunch of cynical defeatists.

I remember watching the 2002 State of the Union speech on a friend’s small box television. (My family didn’t have a TV in those days, and as internet barely existed, I’d never heard Bush’s voice before.). I was thirteen years old. I remember how hard it was to go to sleep that night, and waking up the next morning with that same feeling. There was so much to live and to die for. Good was stronger than evil and compromise and self-justification, and things did not always need to be as they had been. There was another way. There was so much hope. Everything was so clear.

You can read it (or listen to the mp3) here: http://www.americanrhetoric.com/speeches/stateoftheunion2002.htm

And now look at this: http://www.josephloconte.com/commentary/providence-ted-cruz-realpolitik-and-the-future-of-the-middle-east/

The conservatives have sold out and gone selfish and cynical.

Loconte pretty much sums up how I feel.

The world is burning, brutal dictatorships are on the rise, and…  my own side is scrapping almost everything we used to stand for. And kids are being tortured and brainwashed and brutalized, and their parents shot in the face and ground into the dirt by the boots of the dictators and bullies of the world. Life back to normal.

America used to intervene. And millions of lives were saved (Europe 1940s, Korea 1950s). But now, millions have been lost because we wouldn’t do anything (Hungary 1950s) — or because we ran away half-way through and didn’t stay to see it through (Vietnam 1970s, Iraq 2010s).

Look, if you are strong and sane and have a gun, and are walking down the street…. And then you hear a woman and child screaming as they are beaten to death by some crazed junkie in the back alley, and you go on your merry way, because you are so pure “to not get involved”… Their innocent blood is on your head. Maybe even more so than that drug addict in the alley who is half-crazed anyway. You were the sober one, and you did nothing to intervene.

It’s a miracle we are even here. It’s a miracle that we–the “wretched refuse of the teeming shore” — we, the weirdos, the fanatics, the captives, and the refugees of the world — have created this nation, America. We are the superpower of the world now, and it is not of our own doing. God did this. He did this because once upon a time we believed in freedom and saving the world. Not an empire, but a city on a hill. And one that was willing to send our own citizen-soldiers to die for a stranger’s freedom on the other side of the world.

Well, God made America strong because we were supposed to use that strength to defend the weak and the oppressed.

And look at us now.

God save us all.
