Politics is the new religion…and we are all the worse for it

I was reflecting in the shower today how politics has replaced organized religion as the markers of identity in my generation.

But unlike the 4,000+ years of experimentation with organized religion— now filled with precautions, taboos, safety rules, and failsafes learned the hard way — this new religion of politics is careening along, making arrogant haters out of very nice people. Religionists always knew about the dangers of mixing one’s faith with high doses of self-rightousness, rage, sex or pride, but the new political-faiths know nothing. They are empty and desperate for meaning, exploited and hurting in the most childish of ways. It is a sad mess.

Then, later today, a friend sent me this link, and she says it much more eloquently:

Those who invest all of their spiritual energies in politics will reap the whirlwind. The evidence is all around us—the paroxysms of inchoate, infantile rage suffered by those who have turned fallible politicians into saviors and devils, godlike avatars of Good versus Evil.
